Jeeva Samadhi
ஜீவ சமாதி
What is a Jeeva Samadhi?
Easoor Sachidananda Jeeva Samadhi
Jeeva or Sajeeva / Jiva / Samadhi, also known in Tibetan as the state of Tukdam, means "becoming one" with the universal consciousness or merging with the Divine, or "Life" or "Living" as is translated from Tamil in Sanskrit. It is described using different terms across various religions. Buddhists refer to it as Nirvana, while Christians may call it ecstasy or "merging with the spirit." In Samadhi, one remains immersed in infinite bliss, and the duration can range from a few minutes to an indefinite period.
After a divine person enters Samadhi, the physical body can be preserved or disposed of in various ways, such as:
- Earth burial: Bhoo Samadhi
- Water burial: Jal Samadhi
- Fire cremation: Agni Samadhi or Agni Dah
- Other methods: Consumption by birds or wild beasts (e.g., by Parsis), preservation in caves, or mummification (e.g., in Egyptian pyramids).
Jeeva Samadhi, however, is entirely different from these other methods, including Maha Samadhi. It can only be achieved by great yogis and is a very advanced state closely related to the nirvikalpa samadhi state, but permanent. In Maha Samadhi, the body decays over time, and the energy leaves the body upon death. In Jeeva Samadhi, the body does not truly "die," nor does it remain "alive" in the conventional sense. The energy stays in and around the body, and the body does not decay but instead dries out or decays extremely slowly.
In this state, Siddhas enter Samadhi at their volition after completing their earthly mission and dissolving their minds into the Divine. They stop the functioning of their body and mind. This process can occur either before or after the Siddha is enclosed, based on their preference and the instructions given to their disciples or followers.
The Siddha's spiritual achievement ensures that the life force (prana) remains within the body, preventing decay for thousands of years. Instead of traditional life functions like breathing and blood circulation, the body's magnetic force acts as the life force, maintaining the cells in a semi-alive state. Invisible forces continue to guide humanity towards spiritual upliftment.
It is believed that a Siddha can dematerialize their body from the tomb and materialize it elsewhere to continue their mission. For example, Sadasiva Brahmendra is said to have three Jeeva Samadhis at different locations, each powerful, and some claim he is still present.

200 years in Jeeva Samadhi: Teacher of Lama Dashi Dorzho Itigilov
Every Siddha, before taking Jeeva Samadhi, gives specific instructions on how their tomb should be constructed, how their body should be placed, and other directives to maximize the benefit to the world. For example, Hambo Lama Itigilov left a testament asking to be buried in the lotus posture, as he was at the time of his passing. Following his wishes, his body was placed in a pine box and interred at a bumkhan (graveyard for lama burials) in Khukhe-Zurkhen.
In South India, Jeeva Samadhi structures are often much more complex, sometimes even forming complete temples that symbolically represent the yogi within the structure. These temples serve as reminders of the inner spiritual journey through yoga to realize the indweller God.

Saint Bernadette Soubirous (1879 Jeeva Samadhi)
In Jeeva Samadhi, the physical body of the Siddha remains intact and suspended in a semi-alive state for thousands of years. When a spiritual aspirant approaches the vicinity of a Jeeva Samadhi, they receive blessings and guidance from the Siddha, who emits divine energies. This process acts as a method of spiritual communication. A Jeeva Samadhi functions as a significant kundalini energy field. In the presence of such high energy, the seeker’s kundalini energy rises naturally.
Visiting saints and their Samadhis, along with holy temples, is an ancient custom in India for spiritual aspirants beginning their inward journey. This practice facilitates the awakening and proper flow of kundalini energy, bypassing the need for decades of meditation. It is often said that even a mere glance at a saint can purify one by burning away sins through the saint's divine kundalini energy.
Temple layout side view. Jeeva Samadhi is most often located beneath the Ajna chakra (third eye).
Some Siddhas leave specific instructions regarding the rituals to be performed at their Samadhi. These can include the recitation of certain mantras, conducting poojas, offering dhoop (thick smoke), feeding the poor, and performing worship at specific times or days.

**Who gets benefited?** Visiting a Jeeva Samadhi alone does not ensure spiritual benefits. One must approach with an open and receptive heart, with pure intentions and love for the Siddhas. Only then can their grace and energy flow within. Siddhas ensure this connection to avoid misuse of their energies. Saints often emphasize that without openness and acceptance, no one can force grace upon another. Trust, faith, and surrender are key to reaping the full benefits.
Meditating at Jeeva Samadhis with the right mindset for at least 20-30 minutes can yield transformative spiritual benefits. Additionally, Siddhas’ energy can be accessed remotely, transcending physical boundaries, making the power of Jeeva Samadhis universally available.
Jeeva Samadhis act as energy reservoirs, perpetually radiating infinite kundalini energy. Mahavatar Babaji teaches that Siddhas’ silent work prevents global calamities, maintaining cosmic balance. Their placement often surprises travelers, ranging from remote villages to bustling cities. Tamil Nadu, in particular, integrates Jeeva Samadhis into ancient temples, which serve as powerful spiritual hubs, benefiting worshippers who unknowingly connect to the energy of these enlightened beings.
Kulandaivel-Paradesi Jeeva Samadhi Temple The temple faced abandonment but underwent reconstruction in 2015. As of March 2015, it has been restored to a state suitable for darshan.
**Expectations at Jeeva Samadhis:** Unfortunately, many Jeeva Samadhis suffer from neglect. While some are maintained by trusts or followers, others lack caretakers entirely. Despite poor physical conditions, their energy remains potent. In some cases, even when structures around the Samadhi are destroyed, the energy of the Samadhi endures undiminished, offering blessings to those who visit with the right intent.
Nemelli Arulmigu Aalavandar Jeeva Samadhi Temple Currently abandoned and in need of restoration.
Roma Maharishi Jeeva Samadhi Temple An example of a well-maintained Jeeva Samadhi, thanks to caretakers Dhamothara and Manimagalai. For inquiries, call +91-4425992902.
Some Jeeva Samadhis impose specific rules such as dress codes, requiring men to remove shirts or disallowing modern attire like T-shirts and shorts. These are to maintain the sanctity of the site. Access can range from open visitation to restrictions where devotees can only observe from a distance.
Example of a Jeeva Samadhi where visitors are encouraged to touch the Samadhi itself.
Jeeva Samadhis differ in appearance. Some are grand and noticeable, while others are as simple as a Shivalinga or even a small stone. Their locations might be near caves or meditation rooms, sometimes preserving personal items of the Siddha, which continue to emit energy.
Sarbasiddhar Adi Jivapidam Govindaraj Nakar Mangadu Jeeva Samadhi Temple Legend has it that the large stone above the Jeeva Samadhi turned 180 degrees by itself.
Mouna Nirvana Swamigal Temple Adjacent to his Jeeva Samadhi, this is where he used to meditate and sleep.
**Tips for Visiting Jeeva Samadhis:** - Many sites close between 12 p.m. and 4 p.m. or 6 p.m., reopening at 6 a.m. and closing by 8 p.m. - Unexpected events, such as a temple opening during off-hours, can be a sign of divine grace. - Beware of misinformation from locals; focus on connecting spiritually with the Samadhi.

Valmiki Maharishi (some belief he is one of the 18 siddhars by the name of Vaanmeegar siddhar)
All the 18 siddhars of Tamil Nadu and the 84 Maha siddhars have their own Jeeva samadhi's. Some of them, just like the 16th Karmapa, have reached the state of a rainbow body but still entered Jeeva samadhi.

84 Maha Siddhars Jeeva samadhi's
Many of the best and strongest Jeeva Samadhi's, however, have no images available at all. It is always clear that there is more going on in a temple than just the structure when you enter a Jeeva Samadhi area. One of my most amazing visits was the Thayal Nayagi Udanurai Vaitheesaran Koil in Poonamallee, to the west of Chennai. I must have been crying there for over 4 hours as the energy was so overwhelming and I could not leave the place. I have not included the Jeeva Samadhi's of those temples as there are no pictures available of the saints, but only the temple itself. Let it be said that some of those places, when visited, will leave an unforgettable deep impression or insight behind that no words or images can ever describe.
Thayal Nayagi Udanurai Vaitheesaran Koil
Hopefully, those temples that do have images and are not included yet will be added in the future, but for now, please enjoy the blessings that will be bestowed upon you by just looking at their pictures and receiving their blessings.
